Hundreds of thousands of women rallied worldwide in order to protest the abuse and manipulation they still face in today's society. Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Ottawa, Rome, Frankfurt, Osaka- these are just a fraction of the cities where people recently gathered to take a stand. People came together motivated by the "#MeToo" movement sweeping the globe and social media. The march also capitalized on residual emotions left brewing from last year's marches.
However, although the initial concept was the same, the march in each city took on a slightly different agenda. In Ottawa, they addressed the inattention of police and other authorities on major cases involving women, such as murders and disappearances. They also encouraged women to seek positions in politics and the government. In Rome, the crowds protested media biases and aggression towards women who spoke out on the abuse they had experience. An actress who received intense negative media attention for speaking out was welcomed into the march with applause.
In the US, many people who marched last year during the inauguration decided not to march this year because they felt the shift in purpose was too much. This year, marches in the US pushed for women to vote for democrats in upcoming elections and carried a heavily anti-Trump message. Those who abstained this year felt that they should protest sexual abuse and the abuse of power over women. They encouraged women to run for positions of power in order to start and continue change year round, beyond just the day of the march.
Despite how the approach may have been different for each city, all those people gathered to march for something important to them. They wanted to see a difference in the future of women. They wanted to ensure the change developed into a lasting sense of equality.
